Gong Li in Believe it or not?

According to an unidentified source, Chinese actress Gong Li is in an unknown stage of joining Believe It or Not, a biopic of Robert Ripley, by director Tim Burton.

Jim Carrey is currently in talks to star as Robert Ripley. The film is under pre-production and is expected to be finished in 2007.

Chinese rising actress Zhang Ziyi was originally invited to lead the film, but was finally replaced by Gong Li, as the director said Gong is more suitable for the role in the film.

Gong Li has just finished the filming of Michael Mann's crime drama "Miami Vice", co-starring Oscar winning actor Jamie Foxx.

Believe It or Not picks up with Ripley at the time when he gained celebrity status through a "Believe it or Not" column that chronicled his search for the greatest oddities in the world.

Along the way, he starts to respect his unusual human discoveries as more than mere conquests to be documented.

Ripley was know for his many bizarre discoveries, so we asked what other crazy things we might see. "Crazy things?" Carrey questioned with a laugh and his trademark toothy grin. "Yeah, it's such an incredible world to open up. He was such a champion of the underdog [and] people who were a little bit different and freakish... He was about celebrating life. He was about proving its special-ness."

Number 23 director Joel Schumacher chimed in with his thoughts on Robert Ripley: "He was very glamorous and a great womanizer... Jim showed me a lot of photos of him. He had the most beautiful Chinese girlfriends I've ever seen in my life. They all looked like Gong Li. (Laughs) A beautful dresser, a snappy dresser."
