Presentation for school

Post by Insanity »

Hey! (:

I am in college, studying applied linguistics for Dutch (my native language), English and Italian. Next week I have to give a 10-minute oral presentation for English about anything I want, as long as I can connect it to some part of the English speaking culture. I really want to talk about Jim, but I can't find anything to connect. I thought movies were a part of culture, but my teacher seems to be looking for something more.

I was wondering if you guys could help me think of things? (:
Thank you!

That's the problem, I'm not exactly sure what she's looking for. She just asks "Could you connect it more to the English speaking culture?"

I was thinking about mentioning his charity work maybe?

hmmm......i think she's looking more at something uniquely English/British in nature........i would leave Jim for another time and concentrate on something specific to the UK........a good topic would be the Royal Wedding.......how it's reported on, the British traditions etc..........or you could compare English dialect differences in the UK......the obvious choice would be to compare Scots English with Queens English.....
The course is linguistics so she's looking specifically at language :D tailor the project to the course and her interests and it'll work.........

Maybe the best thing to do is to ask the teacher herself. Its hard for us to help you with such little info.

Just out of curiosity did you mean the British English or the American English?

here's an idea...........you could compare the spoken Queens English of the 1940's with spoken language today ......if you look at the latest Oxford English dictionary there are now loads of words that didn't exist back then........but it would be worth actually asking the teacher what she's looking for....... :D

It doesn't matter what kind of English. Just the English speaking culture - UK, US, Canada, Australia, anything. She's not looking for any language things (although thank you for the suggestion, fluffy!), I'm just supposed to be able to talk about something I like for 10 minutes and then somehow connect it to culture. There are people talking about Twilight, True Blood, House M.D. and music bands so I know it's alright for me to talk about Jim Carrey.

This is what the assignment says: "Prepare a ten-minute talk (approximately) in spontaneous, stylistically adequate English. As a subject, you are free to choose any subject that touches on English speaking culture in its widest meaning."

Just elaborate on the evolution of his career and then maybe throw in some details of his personal life (relationships, daughter, depression, etc.).

something called "The Jim Carrey Dialect"

Wasn't he the one who started "Alrighty then"? in Bruce Almighty
similar to the famous words
"Go ahead, make my day" by Clint Eastwood

There are Carreyisms that were created or said by Jim
Wasn't he the one who thought of the name "The Fockers?"

What other words or sayings did Jim make famous?

Just a thought, I don't know if this would be applicable or not
for your project

I am intrigued by The Jim Carrey Dialect. xD That's actually a good idea!

Thank you, guys! You're helping me a lot (:

Also, I'm allowed to show a videoclip about 1-2mins long. Should I show them The Monopoly Guy scene or the Slinky scene (both Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls)? Or something else? (:

Chips and Dip;

It all depends on what type of speech you are giving, whether it's a narrative or an informational speech.

I would basically focus on the whole idea of how he became who he was; little background but focused more on acting (don't go so much into his struggle but do note it.) Also focus on the fact that American society has almost based everything on entertainment. Compare/contrast how Jim affected this whole genre. Give examples.

If you want you can use my article that I posted a while back of how he influenced my life, please give credit. Point out how he acts, where he conjures up so much of his talent and is able to portray any character he is asked to act.

Bring up some parts of your own experience from life and how you would consider Jim an influencial part of your life whether it's from your own background, personality or how you view things in life.

10 minutes is a long time, so hopefully you can find adequate information. Trust me, the more resources you have the better. I suggest trying websites like JCO, books (there are some out there; amazon.com) magazines with interviews.

Hope this helps out!

Power point
Quotes, picts and even some of Jim's custom smilies may work too
use all three senses in presentation
see  :ace: :lloyd: , hear :grinch: ,
I don't know howyou'd bring in the smell for this one,
maybe Jim's favorite dessert or a sea smell
since he Scuaba Dives (Ithink)
Now that would be good, don't know what his favorite
dessert is though
