Jim Carrey’s The Grinch Returns to the Box Office with a Top 10 Finish
16 Dec 2025 By Tommy Pihl (Editor-in-Chief)
More than two decades after it first stole the hearts of holiday moviegoers, How the Grinch Stole Christmas has proven that its appeal remains evergreen. The 2025 theatrical re-release of the beloved Jim Carrey holiday classic opened at number 8 at the domestic box office this weekend, earning an impressive $1.91 million.
The Universal Pictures re-release played on 2,250 screens, averaging $848 per theater, a solid result for a seasonal reissue competing against several high-profile new releases and ongoing blockbusters. With no prior grosses counted toward this run, the film’s entire $1,909,860 haul came from its opening frame, highlighting strong nostalgia-driven turnout from families and longtime fans.
Originally released in 2000 and directed by Ron Howard, How the Grinch Stole Christmas stars Jim Carrey in one of his most iconic performances as the green, grouchy Grinch who plots to ruin Christmas for the cheerful residents of Whoville. Over the years, the film has become a perennial holiday staple, frequently airing on television and streaming platforms each December.
The decision to bring the film back to theaters in 2025 appears well-timed, as audiences continue to show enthusiasm for theatrical holiday experiences. Finishing in the Top 10 places the Grinch alongside major contemporary releases, underscoring the enduring box office power of recognizable IP and festive classics.
With the holiday season still ahead, Universal may see continued returns in the coming weeks, as families look for Christmas-themed outings. For now, the Grinch has once again carved out a place in the box office charts—proving that even after all these years, his heart (and box office appeal) has more than tripled in size.
