New comedy with Carrey?
25 Oct 1997

According to Variety, MGM has purchased a story for a comedy about a radio station that broadcasts from a mental instituition, and his very interested in casting JIM CARREY in the lead role.

The movie is titled FOOL ON THE HILL and MICHAEL NATHASON, MGM's studio president, said that negotiations over Carrey's participation in the project were still under way Thurday evening.

Nathason also stated that Carrey's asking price won't be an issue: "Jim Carrey has an established price," Nathanson said. "We're making this movie with Jim Carrey." Sources close to the project said it is worth $3 million upfront, against an unspecified seven-figure sum if it gets made.

Screenwriter WILL DAVIES (TWINS, THE REAL MAcCOY), wrote the story and has also signed on to pen the actual script and produce the film.

Davies got his inspiration from a British ITV program named TAKING OVER THE ASYLUM, having updated and moved it to an American setting.

If the project is a go, Carrey will play a window and aluminum siding salesman with a passion for radio. When his character founds an abandoned radio station in a small town mental institution, he starts his own broadcasts, transforming not only the lives of the institution's patients but also those of the town's "normal" residents.
