Sonic 3 Post credit cameo explained

In the post-credits scene of "Sonic the Hedgehog 3", two long-anticipated characters make their debut, and director Jeff Fowler hints at how their arrival will influence the future direction of the franchise.
In the post-credit scene, Amy Rose rushes to Sonic's aid against a swarm of Metal Sonics. Speaking with ScreenRant, Fowler shared how the scene would set the stage for the series' upcoming developments. He expressed excitement over the fan speculation surrounding which characters from Sonic's extensive history would appear next, acknowledging that both fans and the production team each have their own favorite characters. He also revealed that he already has a clear vision for where the series is headed:
"Look, there are so many great characters. Sonic's been around for over 30 years, we love working our way down the list, and it's fun to watch the fans online speculate. Everyone's got their favorites, on our side, everyone's got their favorites. It's fun to make the debate and, yeah, the story ideas, it's a package deal. We would never introduce characters at the end of one of these films that we weren't already excited about where they could take the story."
Fowler also discussed the decision-making process behind including Amy and Metal Sonic in the post-credits scene, comparing their introduction to Shadow's appearance in the previous film. He explained that these characters were chosen to "shake things up" and bring fresh energy to the franchise. Here's more of Fowler's thoughts on the process of selecting major characters for these key moments:
"Because that's really what determines what characters get chosen. It's like, 'What would be new? What would be interesting? What would be a fun direction to take our world?' So, when those characters, like Shadow being introduced at the end of Sonic 2, we knew that he was going to be such an exciting character and was really going to shake things up in the movies. The choice was clear."
Amy Rose presents an opportunity to add a new dynamic to the franchise, on the other hand, thanks to her relationship with the titular blue hedgehog. In most entries in the series, Amy is shown to have a passionate crush on Sonic, leading to her pursuing him across the globe, often to his chagrin. As such, Amy's involvement could bring a fun new dynamic to the screen that longtime fans have been eager to see.
