In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, an alien hedgehog named Shadow crash-lands on Earth in 1974 and is experimented on by Professor Gerald Robotnik at a G.U.N. facility; during an escape attempt, Gerald’s granddaughter Maria is accidentally killed, and Shadow is placed in suspended animation. In 2024, Shadow is released by an unknown hacker and goes on a destructive rampage. Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles are recruited to stop him, but after being overpowered they learn Shadow’s tragic past. They reluctantly team up with Dr. Ivo Robotnik to confront Gerald and stop his plan to fire the destructive Eclipse Cannon. After a massive battle, Gerald is defeated, and Sonic and his friends save Earth. In the final sequences, Metal Sonic and Amy Rose appear, setting up future conflict, and Shadow survives.

| Dr. Ivo Robotnik: | Double your villains, double your fun! (turns to Gerald) |
| Dr. Ivo Robotnik: | Chest bump? (Gerald does not react) |

| Dr. Ivo Robotnik: | Stone, you were more than a sycophant to me. You were a syco-friend. I'm gonna miss your lattes with steamed Austrian goat milk. I love the way you made them! |
| Shadow the Hedgehog: | The light shines, even though the star is gone. |
| Commander Walters: | Shadow's story began a lot like yours, Sonic. But where you found family and friends, Shadow only found pain and loss. |
| Tom Wachowski: | Sonic, you finally found your family. I know it hasn't been easy, but you didn't change who you are in here. |

| Dr. Ivo Robotnik: | Oh! A nano-fist! I haven't seen that since I hate-watched Green Lantern in 2011! |
| Gerald Robotnik: | I was saving it for Comic-Con, but now there won't *be* a Comic-Con! |
| Shadow the Hedgehog: | Professor? |
| Gerald Robotnik: | It's good to see you, Shadow. I knew you'd come home. |
| Shadow the Hedgehog: | I can't get her out of my mind. The pain... it's too much. |
| Gerald Robotnik: | And that is why we must punish them. |
| Dr. Ivo Robotnik: | If I can't rule the world, I might as well save it! |
| Shadow the Hedgehog: | Professor. Is this really what Maria would've wanted? |
| Gerald Robotnik: | The question isn't what Maria would've wanted. It's what do they deserve! Remember what she meant to us, remember what they took from us. |
| Dr. Ivo Robotnik: | Let that be a lesson to you, Juan. Family.. is a field of emotional claymores.. that leave you abandoned, betrayed, and weeping while you eat cake, which creates copious amounts of adipose tissue and what some calloused individuals referred to as.. MAN BOOBS... |
