Exciting news for Jim Carrey fans: a sequel to "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" is officially in development at Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment, according to an exclusive report from The Hollywood Reporter. While no deals have been finalized yet, Jim Carrey is in talks to reprise his iconic role as the Grinch. Ron Howard is also expected to return to direct, with Brian Grazer producing through Imagine Entertainment.

The screenplay is being written by Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer, and David Mandel, the acclaimed comedy writers behind projects such as Barry, Veep, and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Rumors Have Been Building for Two Years
Talk of a possible Grinch sequel has been circulating for some time. In 2024, Jim revealed that returning to the character was one role he would seriously consider revisiting.

Speaking to ComicBook.com, Jim said that a sequel would be difficult because of the demanding makeup process he endured during the original film's production. However, he noted that modern motion-capture technology could make a return much more appealing.
"The thing about it is, on the day I had to do that with a ton of makeup and I could hardly breathe," Jim Carrey explained. "It was an extremely excruciating process."

He added that motion capture would allow him more freedom as a performer and concluded: "Anything's possible in this world. Anything's possible."

Speculation intensified in November 2025 when Jim Carrey reunited with his How the Grinch Stole Christmas co-star Taylor Momsen for the first time in 25 years at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Following the reunion, Momsen hinted that discussions may have taken place, telling Entertainment Tonight: "When Jim Carrey asks you to do something, you pay attention, so we'll see."

Carrey's unforgettable performance helped turn the film into a holiday classic that continues to attract millions of viewers every Christmas season.

The original film has remained one of the most-watched holiday movies on streaming platforms in recent years, demonstrating its lasting popularity with audiences.

Further details about the sequel, including plot information and a potential release date, have not yet been announced.
