Raging wildfires have torn through southern California forcing hundreds of thousands of people from their homes and threatening property and lives from north of Los Angeles to the Mexican border.

Firemen struggled to keep pace with the blaze, and the homes of the actors Mel Gibson, Tom Hanks, Goldie Hawn, Pamela Anderson, Val Kilmer and Jim Carrey, and the singers Sting and Diana Ross were among those threatened.
